Commander James Alden BARBER Jr. attended the University of Southern California as Midshipman in the NROTC regular program, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and his commission as Ensign, United States Navy in June 1955.
Commander BARBER served in USS Lexington CVA 16, USS Lowry DD 770, and USS Hissem DER 400. During this period Commander BARBER received two Masters Degrees and a Doctorate in Political Science.
Commander BARBER reported to the Naval War College, Newport, RI where he served as Plans Officer and held the Stephen B. LUCE Professor of Naval Strategy Chair. The author of numerous articles on naval strategy and naval affairs, Commander BARBER was awarded the Alfred Thayer MAHAN award for literary achievement from the Navy League.
